5Causes of an Atonic Seizure
The exact cause of atonic seizures is usually unclear. In some individuals, the risk is higher due to certain genetic mutations. This means certain changes in the genes would be responsible for the development of atonic seizure. In fact, scientists have found almost 1000 genes linked to epilepsy. Children are more commonly affected by this condition, though it may also affect adults. Symptoms would last into adulthood, but many children may grow them. In some cases, atonic seizures are associated with Lennox-Gastout syndrome, a serious type of epilepsy in children. This disorder is characterized by frequent flare-ups of seizures of different forms. Other factors, such as flickering lights and rapid breathing (hyperventilation), would trigger symptoms in children with this type of epilepsy. [6]
