6Risk Factors
Genetics can be a risk factor of ageusia. In fact, preference for specific tastes can vary, depending on a combination of many components like genetic variation, maturity, gender, learned taste, and exposures. Since ageusia can be caused by many reasons, the list of possible risk factors is also relatively long. Some common ones include increased age, medications, allergies, surgery or trauma on the face or head, poor oral hygiene, alcohol or tobacco use, obesity, neurologic or metabolic disorders, environmental exposures to gases or fungus, radiation or chemotherapy exposure, and infections involving the lower airway, throat, sinuses, or nose.
