7Treatment Options for Acute Myeloid Leukemia

There are basically two phases in treating acute myeloid leukemia

– Remission induction therapy: This stage gets rid of the existing cancer cells with chemotherapy. You need to stay in the hospital during this time as chemotherapy may increase the risk of abnormal bleeding and infection.

– Consolidation therapy: This stage is important for keeping acute myeloid leukemia in remission. Also, it can help prevent a relapse in the future. The main goal is to kill all the remaining cancer cells in the body. Some people may need a stem cell transplant to help the body produce healthy and new bone marrow cells. You may get stem cells from your own body or from a donor. [9]
