8Physiotherapy for Abnormal Posturing
Physiotherapy is often used for treating and improving the symptoms of abnormal posturing. While there are many options, postural rehabilitation is the most common one. It combines physiotherapy and exercises to improve the strength and flexibility of the muscles that support the limb and spine as well as to improve the spinal posture. Two types of exercises can help people with abnormal posturing. These include:
– Strengthening exercises can help improve weak muscles and correct overall posture. Depending on the assessment of your doctor, you can do different exercises to improve the strength of trunk and four limb muscles.
– Stretching exercises can help reduce rigidity and spasticity. They should be done on tight muscles, especially abductors, calf, and hamstring muscles, to maintain normal range of motion. Stretching muscles in the upper limb can also benefit passive movement of all joints in the body. These exercises can also boost the balance of standing and sitting positions. [8]
