8 Common Causes of Osteoarthritis

3Injury & Congenital Abnormalities

In addition to aging, a joint may also wear out after a trauma or physical injury. This form of osteoarthritis is also known as post-traumatic arthritis. The injury may be associated with a car accident, a fall, sports, or other trauma. It is reported that this cause accounts for around 1 out of 10 cases. Injuries may damage the bone or cartilage and speed up the wearing of joints. Common injuries that would cause osteoarthritis include ligament injuries, dislocated joints, or torn cartilage. Sports-related trauma, such as ACL tears or strains, is especially problematic. They may increase the risk of osteoarthritis later in life. [4]

Several individuals may be born with abnormally form joints. These congenital abnormalities tend to be prone to normal wear and tear, which would lead to early disability, joint damage, and degeneration. This cause is often associated with osteoarthritis in the hip joints. The underlying mechanism of this cause is still not fully understood, but many scientists believe it may have something to do with genetics. [5]
