5Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome
Wernicke’s encephalopathy or Wernicke’s disease is a form of brain disorder. It happens when a deficiency of vitamin B1 causes bleeding in the lower parts of the brain. Physical signs of the condition include a loss of muscle coordination and double vision. If left untreated, Wernicke’s disease would progress into Korsakoff syndrome. This is a memory issue that causes remembering information, learning new skills, or processing information. Both conditions are often grouped as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. While it is technically not a type of dementia, many experts often classify it with dementia due to many similarities in symptoms. The main causes include alcoholism, chronic infections, or malnutrition. [5]
