People dealing with lupus may develop nephritis, which is a kidney inflammation. The inflammation makes it challenging for the organ to filter waste and toxins from the blood. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, this kidney inflammation starts within five years of the beginning of lupus.
Symptoms include high blood pressure, darker urine, swelling in the feet and lower legs, blood in the urine, pain in the side, urinating more often at night.
Early symptoms may not be noticed. After diagnosis, it’s imperative that you monitor the kidney function. Note, leaving lupus nephritis untreated can result in ESRD, end-stage renal disease. [7]
