7Screening for Prostate Cancer
In general, most people should start regular screenings for prostate cancer when they reach 55 years old. A digital rectal exam can be used for detecting any abnormal signs. During this procedure, the doctor will put a gloved finger into the rectum to look for any unusual problems in the prostate. Another choice is the PSA or prostate-specific antigen test. This is a type of blood test that can measure the number of prostate-specific antigens in the body. A higher than usual level might suggest prostate cancer. If you have major risk factors, it is important to start regular screenings at younger ages.[7]
