How to Prevent Blood Clots

A blood clot occurs when a clump of blood changes from the liquid form to a semisolid form. This is a necessary process that keeps the body from losing too much blood during an injury or wound. However, when a clot does not dissolve itself, it may lead to a dangerous health issue. The blood clot may move through the veins to your lungs and heart, which would become stuck and restrict blood flow. Below are some simple ways to help you prevent blood clots.

1Stay Hydrated

Serious dehydration would make blood become thicker and promote the formation of blood clot. To prevent this, you should drink a lot of water. This is especially important for older people and those who are at higher risk. It is recommended to drink around 2 liters of water per day. The exact amount can vary, depending on the gender, age, and physical activities. Make sure not to let your body feel thirsty as it is a sign of dehydration. A good way to check whether you are dehydrated is to see the urine color. If it is clear or pale yellow, you may drink enough. If it has a dark color, drink more.  [1]
