CVS plans to sell CBD products in in eight states

On Wednesday, CVS Pharmacy stated its plan to sell CBD products in 8 states. The leading drug store chain is going to market the topical CBD products, including roll-ons, sprays and creams, as “an alternative relief treatment,” CVS announced in a statement. Also, the company will partner with a third party to examine and verify the quality of all topicals in drug stores.

“We plan to carry CBD products in some selected states to meet increasing demands of the consumers for alternative options,” said Mike DeAngelis – Health Spokesperson of CVA.

The products will be distributed in Tennessee, Maryland, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Colorado, California, and Alabama.

Cannabidiol or CBD is originated from the hemp plant, a relative to marijuana in the cannabis family. Both plants are loaded with abundant forms of cannabinoids, but the latter is rich in THC – a psychoactive component, while hemp contains CBD, a non-psychoactive chemical of cannabis which has been mentioned recently for its potential benefits in medicine.

CBD has been praised as a treatment for a variety of conditions such as cancer, inflammation, pain, and anxiety. However, experts say that only little trustworthy research has been done on the effects of CBD on humans. Epidiolex is the only CBD oil approved by the FDA which is often used for treating seizures related to epilepsy.

“Our society has jumped far ahead of science,” Dr. Margaret Haney – the director of the Marijuana Research Lab at Columbia and a neurobiology professor at Columbia University – said. “So it is showing up in many forms of product that you can use. There are many different ways to use CBD, but how we have known about CBD is still limited.”

The CVS has nearly 10,000 stores all over the country and will soon distribute CBD products in more than 800 stores in 8 states. The company announces that effectiveness claims would vary significantly from product to product, but it doesn’t plan to promote any of the products as a “cure-all” item.
“We are going to implement everything slowly, but we think it is what our customers are looking for,” Larry Merlo – CEO of CVS Health – said.

The company also noted that it won’t sell any CBD-based food additives or supplements. Under the Federal Cosmetic, Drug, and Food Act, it is illegal to distribute drug ingredients such as CBD in the food supply. For this reason, the drug store chain will promote the salves and creams as OTC medicinal products, sold in dedicated displays.
